AMD Unveils Details for Next-Gen Kraken Point APU Featuring Zen 5 and Zen 5C Cor
In the midst of a dynamic 2024, AMD has shared insights into its next-gen APUs, codenamed Kraken Point, revealing a combination of Zen 5 and Zen 5C processing cores alongside RDNA 3.5 graphics. While the Kraken Point processors are slated for a 2025 release, sources suggest AMD’s intention to introduce them to the mainstream laptop market, providing PC gamers with a new avenue for on-the-go gaming.
Although the Kraken Point processors are not yet available, speculation about AMD’s Zen 5 CPU lineup being in production has been gaining momentum. Termed Granite Ridge by AMD, these CPUs are rumored to potentially launch in April 2024, potentially as the Ryzen 9000 series catering to desktop users, including PC gamers and businesses. The existing Ryzen 7000 series of desktop CPUs falls under the Zen 4 category, with models like the Ryzen 5 7600X and Ryzen 7 7800X3D leading the lineup. Meanwhile, the laptop market has been served by APUs like the Ryzen 7040 series.

Recent details about AMD’s upcoming Kraken Point APUs have started circulating on social media. According to information shared by a user named Olrak29_ on Twitter, the Kraken Point lineup is expected to feature 8 cores and 16 threads. These cores will be divided into four Zen 5 cores and four Zen 5C cores, with the latter boasting lower clock speeds but higher efficiency compared to the former. Notably, Kraken Point’s graphics architecture will be based on RDNA 3.5, diverging from the anticipated RDNA 4, which represents the next generation of AMD graphics technology. For context, RDNA 3 powers GPUs like the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT.
In addition to Kraken Point, AMD’s APU lineups for both 2024 and 2025 will include processors from the Strix Point and Hawk Point lines. While Kraken Point APUs are expected to find a place in desktop systems, AMD aims to extend their presence to the laptop market, where they will contend with Intel’s forthcoming Arrow Lake processors. With Intel transitioning away from the LGA1700 socket and AMD maintaining the AM5 socket through 2025, the performance of these new processors on a technical level remains a point of anticipation.
