Developer of Popular VR Game “Rec Room” Holds Off on PlayStation VR2 Release
The developer of the well-received sandbox VR game, Rec Room, has expressed reservations about porting the game to PlayStation VR2, citing the current inability to “justify” the undertaking. PlayStation VR2, catering to PS5 users, has showcased an array of games, including notable entries from Sony’s flagship franchises like Horizon and Gran Turismo 7 with VR functionality. However, one developer seems hesitant about embracing the VR platform.
Since its initial launch in 2016, Rec Room has garnered modest success, blending elements of a sandbox game with a game creation tool. Comparable to titles such as Roblox and Dreams, Rec Room allows users to both play pre-designed games and create their own using an in-game engine. The game has seen releases on various platforms, including PC, PlayStation, Xbox consoles, and VR versions on both the original PlayStation VR and Meta Quest. Despite this widespread availability, a recent statement from co-founder Cameron Brown suggests a PlayStation VR2 version is not currently on the horizon.

In an “AMA” thread on Reddit, Cameron Brown of Against Gravity expressed the challenges associated with a PS VR2 port of Rec Room, deeming it a “non-trivial” task and indicating that the studio “can’t justify the cost” at present. While Brown did not seem particularly enthusiastic about a PS VR2 release, a spokesperson later clarified that the studio remains open to the possibility of bringing the game to PlayStation VR2 in the future. Currently, PlayStation users can only experience Rec Room in VR through the original PS VR on PS4 or via PS5’s backward compatibility mode.
